New Yorks oldest Irish bar: Inside McSorleys Old Ale House

mcsorley's old ale house

Harry Houdini, the Hungarian-American escape artist and magician, was a regular at McSorley’s. To this day, a pair of his handcuffs can be seen dangling from the rafters by the front right window. Two of McSorley's mottos are "Be Good or Be Gone", and "We were here before you were born".

I was overall pleasantly surprised by the burger at McSorley's, but I wish the cheese had been more melted.

McSorley’s has been open since 1854, and managed to stay so because, at one time, it operated as a speakeasy. The iconic mugs that McSorley’s ale is served in today are a vestige of the Prohibition era when the bar would serve “near beer” (beer with little to no alcohol content) to most patrons. When they returned from the war, the remaining soldiers celebrated by going to McSorley’s, ordering a hearty smattering of light and dark beers and taking down their wishbones. E. Cummings described McSorley's as "the ale which never lets you grow old".[30] He also described the bar as "snug and evil".[30][35] McSorley's was the focus of several articles by New Yorker author Joseph Mitchell.

All the world’s a stage: Inside the raw, raucous, and remarkable world of North American fringe festivals

John McSorley loved cats, keeping up to 18 in the bar at once—a quirk immortalized by John French Sloan in his 1929 painting McSorley’s Cats. In 2011, New York City passed a law forbidding bars and restaurants from keeping cats. Minnie was forced out and, five years later, the Department of Health closed McSorley’s for four days while they resolved a rodent problem. In 1939, when then-owner Daniel O’Connell died and left the bar to his daughter, Dorothy O’Connell Kirwan, she honored the no-women policy and appointed her husband as manager. When the bar celebrated its centennial, Kirwan had her celebratory drink outside on the sidewalk. After women were finally admitted, Kirwan declined to be the first woman served, a decision that makes more sense if you know that the first women’s restroom wasn’t added until 16 years later.

Five hidden secrets of McSorley’s Old Ale House

mcsorley's old ale house

Since its establishment in 1854, McSorley’s sawdusted floors and tchotchke-covered walls have beckoned countless New Yorkers and visitors alike. It’s been home to presidents and poets, scallywags and scribes—and just about everyone in between. No Deliveries, you have to kick it old school and come to the pub for food and drinks.

The menu at McSorley's is limited, but they had quite a few fan-favorite menu items, from burgers and a fried-chicken sandwich to more traditional items like corned-beef hash and chili. Joseph Mitchell’s book (McSorley’s Wonderful Saloon) and his obituary from the New York Times, hangs beside a LIFE magazine feature story from 1943. You’ll also find a signed copy of Frank McCourt’s best-seller Angela’s Ashes (A gift from the author after his Tom Snyder television interview which took place in the Old Ale House). Many important 20th-century writers would also frequent New York’s oldest Irish bar, including Hunter S. Thompson, Gilbert Sorrentino, Christopher Morley, Paul Blackburn, and, fittingly, Brendan Behan. During World War I, McSorley’s offered all US troops a turkey dinner before deployment. It became tradition for the soldiers to leave the turkeys’ wishbones in the pub to be snapped upon their return.

The exit door (which was an alternate entrance during prohibition) is currently Stinky and Minnie’s (the house cats) way in and out when the crowds get too large. The spirits of ex-presidents, society figure heads, entertainers and athletes mingle with the working class, the poets and the artists — with a healthy smattering of cats tossed in for good measure! There is vastly more than meets the eye and certainly more than a single visit or even a hundred can possibly reveal. The inspiration for numerous books, paintings and poems, McSorley’s retains, to this day, a static serenity. It is an oasis in an age of disposable objects, quick fixes and attention spans that sputter and stall in short order.

I was playing in bands now, mostly punk, and that was more interesting to me than my classes or the sorry state of the world. If I got called up, I figured—well, I don’t know what I figured. A personal history of New York’s oldest bar and its military legends. An 1865 wanted poster offering a $100,000 reward for the capture of the president’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth, hangs above the bar.

He's also served then Vice President Joe Biden and many other national politicians, athletes and celebrities. The beloved McGillin's bartender is credited with being a matchmaker, saving marriages and pouring countless drinks while working at Philadelphia's oldest continually operating tavern. The Soviet Union had invaded Afghanistan the previous December and refused to leave, so Jimmy Carter had the eighteen- and nineteen year-olds go to their post office and put their names on a piece of paper. I wasn’t for it—in fact, I even put a sticker on my form that the War Resisters’ League was handing out. I was not, however, a particularly serious young man, and indeed a few weeks later when I registered for my classes at NYU I put one of those stickers on that form, too.

Many others have tried to mimic its old-school attitude and its no-nonsense approach, but none come close to the real deal. The bar regularly hosts war veterans, and some have left memorabilia behind. Patrons have gifted the bar two purple hearts, challenge coins, patches, and helmets from all eras. There’s a Civil War-era bayonet, shackles from Camp Sumter, an invitation to the opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, and an original print of Nat Fien’s Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph “The Babe Bows Out,” donated by Fien, a McSorley’s regular. Spending eternity at McSorley’s isn’t an option available to everyone.

Back then, most of the people who lived in the East Village had grown up there. Somehow, they made it back to East 7th St. It also meant that some of those ominous, unsnapped wishbones had been hung up by their brothers, their cousins, their neighbors and friends. When one guest ordered a light and a dark beer for himself and someone else, they seemed surprised when they were each handed two beers. The bartender then explained that they always give people two beers each. According to Eater, each mug holds roughly 6 ounces per glass — a US pint holds 16 ounces — which makes each drink easier to finish and carry around the bar.

Located on First Avenue and occupying the entire block between 29th and 30th Streets — the Brewery proudly carried huge billboards advertising both McSorley’s Cream Stock Ale and McSorley’s Famous Lager. In September, 1979 I moved from Port Washington, Long Island, to Greenwich Village, to be a freshman at New York University. Folk singer Dave Van Ronk also posed outside of McSorley’s Old Ale House for the cover of his 1964 album, Inside Dave Van Ronk. One of the bar’s former in-house cats even made it into the photo. Menu items are written on chalkboards posted throughout the bar and, along with the aforementioned cheese plate, typically include hash, chili, burgers, and a fried chicken sandwich. In 1864, the two-story structure that originally housed McSorley’s was renovated, expanded and transformed into a five-level tenement.

Though famous, McSorley's hasn't always been on the right side of history. According to The New York Times, women have only been allowed inside the bar since 1970, when two members of the National Organization for Women sued the bar for violating the equal-protection ordinance of the 14th Amendment. There were also no female bartenders until the mid-'90s, according to Bedford + Bowery. If the big wood bar is the heart of the Old Ale House, then certainly the coal burning stove is the soul. Perhaps the most touching piece of history in McSorley’s, however, are the wishbones hanging from a light above the bar. Before his 1910 death, John passed the pub on to his son, Bill, who later sold it to patron and retired police officer, Daniel O’Connell.

Part of the charm of McSorley's, in addition to the low prices, is the lack of choice. In a city like New York, I'm accustomed to lengthy drink menus with steep prices. I actually enjoyed the lack of choice, which made ordering fast and simple. When Business Insider's Sarah Jacobs visited in 2017, the beer cost $5.50.

The final type of Hawaii cruise is the one-way repositioning sailing, typically offered when ships are heading to or leaving Alaska. Most travelers stick to one, possibly two islands, during a Hawaii vacation. If you want to sample the highlights of several islands, from Volcanoes National Park near Hilo, Hawaii, to Kauai's Waimea Canyon and Napali Coast, it's much simpler to do that from a cruise ship. The best Hawaii cruises allow you to trek through the lush Hana Rainforest, or enjoy a more volcanic experience on the Big Island.

The Best Time of Year for an Alaska Cruise A Complete Guide

best time for cruise in alaska

We provide expert advice, insightful reviews, and comprehensive guides to help seasoned and novice cruisers create their ideal sea journeys. Whether you desire adventure, luxury, or exploration, High Seas Cruising is your compass to unforgettable cruise vacations. Fortunately, any time during the Alaska cruise season is good for salmon fishing. Fortunately for us, whales are a common sight along Alaska’s coastline from May to September. Peak cruising months, July and August, are the best time of year to cruise to Alaska. During these months you will have the warmest weather and the greatest chance to see wildlife.

The best time to see the Northern Lights on an Alaska cruise

In Alaska, on the other hand, you will want to lower your expectations when it comes to weather. It’s challenging to predict whether your cruise will encounter sunny skies and 70 degrees, or seven days of straight rain. Sure, booking your cruise in June usually results in better weather compared to one in September, but weather conditions are never guaranteed.

In Seattle, for instance, you’ll want to research the best way to get from the airport to your hotel, and from your hotel to the cruise port. In most instances, a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft is the most convenient option. However, your hotel may also provide a shuttle, or you could even take the light rail from the airport to downtown.

A cruisetour is a vacation that combines a full-length cruise (seven nights or longer) with an escorted tour on land before or after the cruise. Dreading transporting your luggage from the cruise terminal to the airport check-in desk? Royal Caribbean and the Port of Seattle offer a luggage valet service, which allows you to bypass standard airport check-in. One of my favorite Alaska cruise “hacks” is to utilize Seattle-Tacoma International Airport’s luggage valet service. Whether you’re cruising with an elaborate mirrorless camera or just your cell phone, it’s hard to take a bad photo of somewhere as beautiful as Alaska.

As your ship sails away from each port of call in Alaska, you will be rewarded with stunning views of the Inside Passage, and you won’t want to miss sailaway each evening. However, sailaway times often overlap with the early dining time, meaning you’ll miss these scenic sailings if you're in the Main Dining Room. If so, you can almost always expect warm temperatures and, aside from a chance of rain, pleasant weather conditions.

Alaska cruise in June: Summer without the biggest crowds

While booking shore excursions on Royal Caribbean’s Cruise Planner website is convenient, you might find more options (or lower prices) by booking through independent tour operators. Read on for the best times to visit Alaska for the northern lights, wildlife viewing, snow sports, cruises, and good deals on flights and hotels. Nature is in full bloom during cruise season in Alaska, but what you’ll see depends on the time of year and location.

Best Months to Cruise to Alaska for Specific Activities in Alaska

Icebergs float off the coast, creating the perfect habitat for unique wildlife you won't find elsewhere in the country. Late May and early June are the best possible times to view a momma moose and her calves in Alaska. If you do see these majestic creatures hulking around, stay far back (at least 50 feet) and never disturb a lone calf, as mom is somewhere nearby. Matt started Royal Caribbean Blog in 2010 as a place to share his passion for all things Royal Caribbean with readers. He oversees all the writers at Royal Caribbean Blog, and writes a great deal of content on a daily basis.

While you can purchase packages once onboard, the cost may be significantly higher than what you could have booked ahead of time. Plus, because you can cancel add-ons for a full refund up to 48 hours before your sailing, you have flexibility in case you change your mind on these purchases later on. Cheap cruises are never a guarantee, but one trend we have noticed in the past few years is that Alaska cruises in the shoulder season are often heavily discounted at the last minute.

There are a large number of cruisers who visit Alaska specifically for the sport of salmon fishing. The smaller boats used by whale-watching tour groups allow you to encounter the whales closely. And the tour guides love to share interesting facts about the species and whale pods in the area. Sitting on the top deck searching for whale sightings is one of my favorite activities while cruising in Alaska. If you’ve never visited Alaska, you’ll be happy to know that a cruise ship is the best way to explore America’s Last Frontier.

If your cruise is a one-way itinerary that starts or ends in Seward, Alaska, transportation logistics require more pre-planning. The closest major airport to Seward is Anchorage, which is over two hours away by car. Due to this, you might want to consider taking a Royal Caribbean shuttle or the train from Seward to Anchorage, which must be scheduled in advance. Because you will arrive in your embarkation city the night before your cruise, remember to book your hotel stay sooner rather than later.

If you are traveling on a budget, cruise in May to take advantage of the discounted rates. While some people prefer the reduced crowds and whale-watching opportunities of midsummer, others might value the warmer weather and greater options for excursions you get in the late summer months. An additional perk of opting for a shoulder season cruise, particularly in September, is that it is also the best time to cruise Alaska for Northern Lights. The darkening skies offer a chance to view the Northern Lights from the deck of your cruise ship. It’s a remarkable bonus to an already unforgettable Alaska cruise experience.

Booking reservations for earlier in the week ensures you have wiggle room in case of an unanticipated schedule change. When booking entertainment reservations, we recommend sticking to shows earlier in the week. If, for instance, a show is offered on the second, fifth, and last evening of the cruise, try to book the first day available. On my Alaska cruise last June, it was nearly 80 degrees on several port days—I spent the day sweating while walking around Skagway. Having packed only long sleeve shirts and pants for my Alaska cruise, I regretted not bringing more lightweight clothing.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Ship Port

isla roatan honduras cruise port

Besides the animal sanctuary, the family-owned company also offers island tours, kayaking, hydro bikes, and snorkeling adventures. Excursions to the all-inclusive beach club are available through your cruise ship. It’s a 30 minute bus ride to the private beach club and everything is included from towels, umbrellas, lunch, and unlimited drinks. Located just off the port of West End and close to Mahogany Bay, West Bay Beach offers some of the best white sand beaches and crystal clear waters in the area. For entrance into the beach area the cost is $27 for children and $35 for adults. The nature trail in Mahogany Bay will take you to the free beach area.

Final Thoughts of Mahogany Bay

The diverse culture and unique natural wonders of Roatán make for a one-of-a-kind cruise port experience. It also serves as a home-port to several of Carnival’s ships that sail from Roatán Island throughout the Caribbean Sea. With its stunning scenery and wide range of activities, Mahogany Bay has quickly become one of the most popular ports of call for Carnival Cruise Line passengers.

More World Destinations

As you embark on your Roatan excursion, remember to savor the flavors of local cuisine, explore the island’s historical and cultural sites, and immerse yourself in its natural wonders. Roatan, with its captivating beauty, diverse activities, and warm hospitality, promises a cruise port experience like no other. Ultimately, both cruise line and private company excursions offer unique advantages.

The Mahogany Bay Terminal

Take your pick and enjoy a delightful seafood meal with the mesmerizing view of the ocean. If you prefer a variety of international and fusion cuisine, Roatan has got you covered. Specifically, Ipanema Beach Bar And Grill offers American dishes and a beautiful water view setting. Satisfy your craving for Italian-American dishes at Happy Harry’s Hideaway. Explore Roatan’s stunning coastline and tranquil mangrove forests by kayak. This low-impact water activity is suitable for all ages and allows you to cover a considerable distance while taking in the natural beauty of the island.

Everyone who had booked with Victor Bodden Tours had great things to say about them. While this is great, I do hope that the port doesn’t become another “Costa Maya” where cruise visitors end up never leaving the port. I have put together a full list of the best Roatan tours that are available based on some of the feedback we heard from our fellow passengers and on our own experience. My wife Morag has a thing about Sloths, so we had to include an opportunity to cuddle some sloths in our Itinerary.

isla roatan honduras cruise port

There’s so much to do in the port area that you could spend your entire day ashore just enjoying what it has to offer. However, if you plan to go off exploring on your own or taking an excursion, there’s also a transportation spot with taxis and shuttles available. This trail takes you back into a wooded area and winds around the water. If you have mobility issues, we recommend either taking the chairlift or the paved path as the nature trail includes some slight elevation changes and has loose gravel. But if you want a nice trip through some flora on your way to the beach — and some great spots to take photos of your ship — consider choosing the nature trail. Those who want to skip the chairlift (and have some shade on their way over to the beach) can walk over from the shopping area in about 10 minutes.

Art, Shopping and Other Activities

Mahogany Bay is located on the west end of the isla Roatan in the country of Honduras. Nestled in the protected southern waters of Dixon Cove, the port offers over 20 acres for passengers to enjoy. As you exit the store you will see the walkway leads to an open air plaza with lots of shops. Other popular activities include kayaking through the mangroves or taking an island-hopping tour.

This is an exclusive port area which is owned by Carnival Corporation. So if you are sailing on any of the Carnival Cruise Line fleet or with Princess Cruises, you will dock at Mahogany Bay. So all the Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships dock here as well as ships from Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC, TUI, and Virgin Voyages.

There is also a beach bar and grill, a volleyball court, and a water park for kids. During your visit to Roatan’s cruise port, indulge your love for wildlife and nature with these unique experiences. Many shore excursions offer snorkeling as part of their package, and you may even find options that combine this activity with a beach break or island tour. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or trying snorkeling for the first time, you’re in for a treat as you immerse yourself in the colorful underwater world of Roatan. Roatan is known for its vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life, making it an ideal destination for snorkeling and scuba diving. You can join a guided snorkeling or diving tour or rent equipment to explore on your own.

Mahogany Bay is just a small part of the island and acts as the entryway into the gorgeous isle. However, you’ll get to see more of the island if you hire a local guide. The port itself is being expanded and there are apparently plans to build an additional pier (currently only one cruise ship can dock at a time). There is no end to the different types of shore excursions or tours that are available in Roatan. Your decision should be based on what matters most to you—whether it’s convenience, cost, personalized experiences, or exploring Roatan cruise port’s hidden gems with a local touch. Roatan has become a favored destination for many cruise lines, thanks to its natural beauty, diverse activities, and welcoming locals.

Once ashore, you will find a welcoming environment, where you can enjoy a number of excursions like exploring the beautiful Caribbean Sea. These tours often include stops at scenic points and local attractions, making them an interesting and exciting way to explore the island’s natural beauty. Mahogany Bay is more than just a cruise port, it’s a launchpad into the wonders of Roatan. Whether you are an adventure-seeker or looking for relaxation, this little island has it all.

For those travelers who want to get to see all of the islands in a short time, you can book a trip for a full Roatan Island Tour. There are two different piers that cruise ships stop at when visiting Roatan. Carnival cruise ships will visit Mahogany Bay while other cruise lines will stop at Coxen Hole. There are several modes of transportation available for you to explore Roatan. Taxis are a popular option, and they can be found at the taxi stand near the cruise port. Getting around Roatan is relatively easy, with various transportation options available, including car rentals and taxi stands.

As an excursion through Carnival Cruise Line, the prices are currently listed as $75 for adults and $70 for kids ages 8 to 12. You must be at least 8 years old to ride, and there’s a maximum weight of 275 pounds. The Deluxe Package comes with everything the regular package does, plus access to an upgraded lounge area with a four-post beach bed shaded in Sunbrella canvas with wrap-around curtains. Each lounge area comes with a cooler stocked with four water bottles and chilled wipes.

In addition, you can opt for a combo tour that includes some other activities such as kayaking, animal encounters, horseback riding, or water activities. If you are booked on this excursion, you will take a 40 minutes bus ride from the cruise center to a private resort called Anthony key’s resort. In Roatan, West Bay Beach offers some of the most beautiful and vibrant coral reefs in the world.

There are also many restaurants with outdoor seating to take advantage of Roatan’s fantastic weather. The area has plenty of facilities to cater to your needs during your time ashore. Here, you will find a variety of popular activities, including zipline tours and the SNUBA underwater diving experience. Roatan, Honduras, features two main cruise ports where you and your fellow passengers will likely dock when visiting this beautiful island.

The Concierge Class staterooms are spacious and comfortable, with a total size of 209 square feet. The cabin features a private balcony with sliding glass doors, allowing you to enjoy the stunning ocean views from the comfort of your own room.

AquaClass vs. The Retreat vs. Concierge: Getting On and Off the Ship

For cruisers wanting the step up their square footage or storage space, a Celebrity Suite will do the trick. Across the fleet, all ships offer connecting rooms, with some of the largest suites joining to sleep up to 10 people. The line also features special accommodations for solo cruisers on a small number of its vessels (specifics are noted below under applicable cabin categories).

The menu includes several options, including a body pillow, a Swedish Isotonic pillow, and a hypoallergenic pillow. We didn’t try any of those options, however, because the pillows in the stateroom were very comfortable. If you are looking for an elevated experience with some special perks on your next Celebrity Cruise, concierge class may be a great option. It doesn’t cost too much extra, and includes some fun bonuses and perks that may be worth the extra expense. The other benefits to concierge class aren't all that important to us (bottle of sparkling wine, daily treats, access to the concierge) but may be important to others.

Celebrity Cruises Classes Explained: AquaClass vs The Retreat vs Concierge

Note that Celebrity Flora, Celebrity Xpedition and Celebrity Xploration have neither The Retreat nor Luminae, so suite passengers do not have access to those venues. Amenities also may vary from those offered on the fleet's non-expedition ships. For an even bigger upgrade, Royal Suites come in at between 538 and 687 square feet with verandas measuring 72 to 195 square feet. Each has ample storage, separate lounging and sleeping quarters, and a generously sized bathroom with a shower and separate soaking tub that's perfect for relaxing after a day in port. One way Celebrity stands apart from sister cruise line Royal Caribbean is by placing a larger emphasis on its suite offerings, with broad suite privileges on almost all of its ships.

Key Benefits of Celebrity Cruises Concierge Class

Indoor and outdoor space come together to create your private sanctuary at sea. Relax on your spacious veranda and enjoy amenities that all contribute to your luxury experience. A dedicated concierge is always just steps away from your room to assist with your vacation needs. Attend exclusive events, including a Welcome Aboard Concierge Class Lunch and Destination Seminar.

Looking at the Solstice there are GTY Concierge Class and GTY Veranda cabins available. Looked through the Celebrity site and found a boarding day lunch with Concierge but really couldn't find a lot more. What other "upgrades" come with Concierge Class and is the $110 a good deal? A walkthrough of our concierge balcony stateroom onboard Celebrity Infinity. They earn their own category here because, as those who book the accommodations will find, instead of a traditional balcony, they have a window that can be raised and lowered with the push of a button. A set of see-through folding doors allows the area near the window to be cordoned off in order to make it feel like a more traditional balcony.

Solo travelers looking to book European cruises have a range of options when it comes to cabin accommodations. One of the unique features of the Concierge Class stateroom is the infinite veranda. This innovative design allows you to open the sliding glass doors and transform your entire room into a veranda, providing an even greater sense of space and connection to the ocean. You can enjoy the fresh sea breeze and stunning views without ever leaving your room.

Because Celebrity's expedition vessels are much smaller, they warrant their own section. What follows is a breakdown of the cabin types – most of which are suites – offered on each ship. They also include high ceilings, a shower/tub combo, and separate living and sleeping areas. The Retreat is the name of Celebrity's version of "ship within a ship" concept, where suite guests pay extra to get a number of exclusives available only to them.

These options may include concierge rooms, prime concierge rooms, and sunset concierge rooms. The prime rooms are in a better location and sunset rooms are at the aft of the ship. During our sailing, we booked a regular concierge room, and had a verandah stateroom with a slightly smaller verandah with an obstructed view. I am in Concierge for an October itinerary and looking forward to checking out the embarkation day lunch in the MDR. While Concierge has their own check-in queue, I have found that most queues move very quickly for Celebrity.

Celebrity Cruises offers Concierge Class staterooms on its ships, which is one step above Veranda staterooms, which are the entry-level balcony cabins. Overall, Celebrity Cruises' Concierge Class is an excellent choice if you're looking for a luxurious cruising experience. With a range of amenities and services, you're sure to have a comfortable and convenient time on board. One of the unique benefits of being a Concierge Class guest is access to an exclusive lunch in the main dining room. This lunch is only available to Concierge Class and above, and it features a special menu with unique dishes and flavors. I appreciate the opportunity to try something new and different while enjoying a delicious meal in a beautiful setting.

Unveiling the Cost of Teeth Whitening at the Dentist: Your Guide to a Brighter Smile

Unveiling the Cost of Teeth Whitening at the Dentist: Your Guide to a Brighter Smile

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dental procedure that can improve the appearance of your smile. It can be done in a variety of ways, including using over-the-counter products, visiting a dentist for in-office treatment, or using a combination of both methods. The cost of teeth whitening varies depending on the method you choose, the number of treatments you need, and the location of your dentist.

In-office teeth whitening is typically more expensive than over-the-counter products, but it is also more effective. During an in-office treatment, your dentist will apply a bleaching gel to your teeth and use a special light to activate the gel. This process can take up to an hour, and you may need multiple treatments to achieve your desired results. The cost of in-office teeth whitening typically ranges from $300 to $1,000.

Unveiling the Truth: Numbing Needles at the DentistDiscomfort Decoded

Numbing needles, also known as local anesthetics, are used by dentists to numb a specific area of the mouth before performing a procedure. They work by blocking the nerves that transmit pain signals from the injection site to the brain. Numbing needles are a safe and effective way to make dental procedures more comfortable for patients.

There are two main types of numbing needles used in dentistry: articaine and lidocaine. Articaine is a longer-acting anesthetic that is often used for more extensive procedures, such as root canals or extractions. Lidocaine is a shorter-acting anesthetic that is often used for less invasive procedures, such as fillings or cleanings. The type of anesthetic that is used will depend on the specific procedure being performed.
